| Instructor Bio: | Speaker Overview: Tyler Finkle Division Manager, Historic Preservation – ICC Commonwealth Presentation Topic: "From Chimneys to Beacons: How a Small Buffalo Company Became a Leader in Lighthouse Preservation" As caretakers of North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse, the Old Baldy Foundation understands the demands of maintaining maritime heritage. While day-to-day upkeep is managed by our team, major restoration work—such as replacing stucco, recasting iron, installing copper roofing, or repointing historic brick—requires expert intervention. That’s where specialists like Tyler Finkle and his team at ICC Commonwealth step in. Tyler Finkle serves as the Division Manager of Historic Preservation at ICC Commonwealth, a Buffalo, NY-based firm recognized internationally for its leadership in the preservation and restoration of historic structures—particularly lighthouses. ICC’s work spans from the shores of the U.S. to remote destinations like the Falkland Islands, restoring some of the world’s most iconic and weather-worn beacons. With over 80 lighthouse preservation projects under his leadership, Tyler brings deep experience in structural restoration, materials conservation, and adaptive reuse. His portfolio includes work on Cape Flattery (WA), Cape Henry (VA), Gay Head (MA), Pigeon Point (CA), Tybee Island (GA), and Currituck Beach (NC), among many others. Originally from Youngstown, NY, at the mouth of the Lower Niagara River, Tyler grew up in a sailing family, fostering a lifelong connection to maritime environments. He studied at The Gunnery School in Washington, CT, and earned his degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. His career in preservation began with restoring the Gilded Age mansions of Newport, RI, before joining ICC Commonwealth in 2013. Under the mentorship of renowned preservationist Joe Jakubik, Tyler trained extensively in historic masonry and lighthouse relocation. In 2019, he took over leadership of ICC’s preservation division. About ICC Commonwealth Founded as a local chimney company in Buffalo, ICC Commonwealth (formerly International Chimney Corporation) has evolved into a national leader in historic preservation and specialty construction. The company is known for its expertise in complex restoration, structural stabilization, and relocation of masonry structures, including lighthouses, statues, and historic buildings.
