Location: Old Baldy Lighthouse, Bald Head Island, NC
Speaker: Jack Fryar
Description:
Join us for an evening of history, libations, and coastal charm at the July Historic Happy Hour at Old Baldy! Enjoy unlimited wine and beer as we gather at the base of the iconic Old Baldy Lighthouse for a fascinating talk by historian Jack Fryar.
This month’s topic dives into a little-known chapter of Carolina history: the story of the original Charles Towne. Decades before Charleston, SC took the spotlight, English settlers from Barbados and Massachusetts attempted to carve out a foothold along the Cape Fear River. Between 1664 and 1667, these early colonists established plantations stretching up to 60 miles inland—only to have their ambitions undone by neglect, global conflict, and competing colonial interests. Jack Frayar will bring their forgotten legacy to life in a compelling narrative of ambition, struggle, and historical intrigue.
