Join us for the last Historic Happy Hour of 2026 with maritime archaeologist Stephen Atkinson for an evening exploring the fascinating story of a ship with two identities: La Concorde and Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge.

Stephen will discuss the ongoing archaeological work surrounding these two names and what underwater archaeology can reveal about the ships, people, and histories hidden beneath the water. Enjoy a beer or glass of wine while learning more about one of the most famous shipwrecks connected to North Carolina’s maritime history.

About Stephen Atkinson

Stephen Atkinson began his career in maritime archaeology excavating and conserving artifacts from the Emanuel Point Two Shipwreck in Pensacola, Florida. During his time there, he also helped locate, map, and excavate numerous shipwrecks dating from the 16th through 20th centuries, as well as participating in archaeological projects on land, including Roman forts in northern England, prehistoric caves, and historic cemeteries in Florida and Alabama.

In 2016, Stephen served as an archaeology intern at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center, where he digitally recorded the H.L. Hunley. He later joined the Queen Anne’s Revenge Conservation Lab as a conservator before transferring to the Underwater Archaeology Branch in Kure Beach in 2019 as an Assistant State Archaeologist. In 2024, he was promoted to Deputy State Archaeologist–Underwater, where he is responsible for UAB operations.

Since then, Stephen has led and participated in projects including the recovery of prehistoric dugout canoes, investigation of what may be the 1748 wreck of La Fortuna, and international archaeological work at the Sunken City of Port Royal in Jamaica.
